Ear Cleaning Services

Ear wax is a waxy substance produced naturally by the glands in your ear. The medical term for ear wax is cerumen.  Ear wax has protective benefits.  Ear wax traps dust, dirt, germs, and bacteria to prevent them from entering and in-turn damaging the ear.  Ear wax also helps to lubricate the delicate skin of the ear canal which reduces dry and itchy skin.  Ear wax is essential to keep your ears healthy!

Although ear wax is a good thing, excessive ear wax can cause problems by building up and blocking the ear canal.  Your community hearing health team at Yost Hearing is here to help.  Yost Hearing can safely and effectively remove your ear wax!  Your Team can also make sure that ear wax is not interfering with your hearing aids during your recommended Hearing Aid Routine Care & Maintenance to prevent Hearing Aid Repairs.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up

  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in your ears)

  • Feeling of fullness or clogged ears

  • Ear Discomfort or Pain

  • Hearing Loss

What Causes Ear Wax Build-Up?

  • Incorrect or Excessive Cleaning

Using cotton swabs or other objects in the ear causes irritation and can scratch the sensitive skin in your ear.  This can cause your ear to produce even more wax.  Additionally, you are pushing wax and dirt into your ear further which can damage your eardrum.

  • Environmental Contributors

Tiny particles like pollen, dust, and debris irritate your ears and stimulate ear wax production.

  • Hearing Aids, Ear Plugs, & Earbuds

These objects contact and rub your ears and are considered contact stimulus. Your ears try to protect themselves by producing more ear wax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ear wax be removed at home?

In most cases, ear wax does not need to be bothered.  Leaving it alone is good advice.  Your ears will naturally clean themselves.  The ear wax will naturally migrate from inside the ear canal to the opening of the ear canal.

For mild build-up, some over the counter ear wax removal agents (found in your local drugstore) could be used.  Patients should not try these drops if they have ever experienced holes in the eardrum, pain, or drainage from the ear.  Of course, if these drops prove to be unsuccessful, you will need to contact your doctor.

Yost Hearing does NOT recommend any of the ear wax removal gimmicks seen online or in stores.  In most cases, these products will not work as expected and can damage your ears.  It is always best to consult a professional for ear wax removal.  If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of ear wax build-up let Your Team at Yost Hearing check your ears today!

How long does The Yost Hearing Ear Cleaning take?

The actual ear cleaning using The Earigator generally takes only a few minutes.  For first time patients to the clinic or those new to The Earigator, Yost Hearing recommends allowing at least 15-30 minutes for the total appointment.

Is “ear candling” safe?

Ear candling is not safe at all.  Yost Hearing discourages anyone from trying this method.  Research has determined that ear candling does not work.  It can lead to injuries such as burns, eardrum perforation, and ear canal obstructions.
